Sample questions from Part 12

Here are a few questions from this part. Take the full test to answer all 20 and get your score.

Sample question 1

Statements:
1. All barangay captains are elected officials.
2. No elected official is a presidential appointee.

Which conclusion must follow?

  • No barangay captain is a presidential appointee.
  • Some barangay captains are presidential appointees.
  • All presidential appointees are barangay captains.
  • Some presidential appointees are barangay captains.
Answer: No barangay captain is a presidential appointee.
Barangay captains fall inside the circle of elected officials, which does not overlap with presidential appointees. So no barangay captain is a presidential appointee. The others each contradict the statements.

Sample question 2

Statements:
1. Some nurses are scholars.
2. All scholars are honest.

Which conclusion must follow?

  • All nurses are honest.
  • No nurse is honest.
  • All honest persons are nurses.
  • Some nurses are honest.
Answer: Some nurses are honest.
The nurses who are scholars are also honest, so some nurses are honest. The rest cannot be established from the statements.

Sample question 3

Statements:
1. If the bid is accepted, a contract is signed.
2. If a contract is signed, a notice to proceed is issued.
3. The notice to proceed was not issued.

Which conclusion must follow?

  • The bid was accepted.
  • A contract was signed.
  • The bid was not accepted.
  • The notice to proceed will be issued later.
Answer: The bid was not accepted.
Chain the conditionals: bid accepted → contract signed → notice issued. The notice was not issued, so by modus tollens the contract was not signed and the bid was not accepted.

Sample question 4

Statements:
1. An employee is promoted only if he has a satisfactory rating.
2. Mr. Lim does not have a satisfactory rating.

Which conclusion must follow?

  • Mr. Lim is promoted.
  • Mr. Lim is not promoted.
  • Mr. Lim's rating will improve.
  • Nothing can be concluded about Mr. Lim's promotion.
Answer: Mr. Lim is not promoted.
“Only if” makes the rating a necessary condition. Without it, Mr. Lim is not promoted.

Sample question 5

Statements:
1. Classes are not suspended unless Signal No. 3 is raised.
2. Classes were suspended today.

Which conclusion must follow?

  • No signal was raised.
  • Signal No. 3 was raised only after the classes were suspended.
  • Classes are suspended whenever any signal is raised.
  • Signal No. 3 was raised.
Answer: Signal No. 3 was raised.
“Not suspended unless Signal No. 3” means suspension requires Signal No. 3. Since classes were suspended, Signal No. 3 was raised.
