The Civil Service Exam in a nutshell

The Civil Service Exam is a national examination given by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to find qualified people for the career service of the Philippine government. Passing it earns you a civil service eligibility, which many government positions require.

The exam is also called the Career Service Examination. There are two levels, Professional and Subprofessional, and the exam is offered in more than one format, such as the pen-and-paper test and the computerized test. The CSC announces which formats and schedules are available.

Who should take it?

You should consider taking the exam if you want to:

  • Apply for a permanent (career) position in a national government agency, a local government unit or a government-owned and controlled corporation.
  • Qualify for a promotion that requires a civil service eligibility.
  • Have a recognized government eligibility on record, even before you apply for a specific job.

What does the exam cover?

The test measures general ability rather than specialized subject knowledge. The main areas are Verbal Ability, Numerical Ability, Analytical Ability or Clerical Ability depending on the level, and General Information, which includes the Philippine Constitution and the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.

You can practice each of these areas on our reviewer pages for Verbal Ability, Numerical Ability, Analytical Ability, Clerical Ability and General Information.

What is the passing score?

The passing rate is 80%. This is a high mark, and it is the reason steady practice and reviewing your mistakes matter so much. Our reviewer uses the same 80% mark to tell you whether you passed a part.

What happens after you pass?

Passers receive a certificate of eligibility from the CSC. Eligibility does not guarantee a job, but it lets you apply for positions that require it. Always check the official CSC website for the latest rules about validity and use of your eligibility.

Where to get official information

Exam dates, application steps, requirements and fees are set by the CSC and can change. Always confirm them on the official CSC website (csc.gov.ph) or at a CSC regional or field office. This website is an independent study resource and is not affiliated with the CSC.
